"A Ticking Time Bomb"

Dominik's Story

“Sometimes we forget how lucky we are to have the medical innovations we need so close to home,” says Dominik Agostini.

Dominik is a St. Luke’s and Roosevelt Hospitals patient who found out firsthand just how much “state-of-the-art” medicine and highly trained staff can mean to a guy who didn’t even know he was sick. “When it’s your turn and you’re the patient, you find yourself praying that the medical personnel have the essential equipment they need to take care of you.”

A Ticking Time Bomb

In 2007, Dominik knew he was out of shape. He was frequently out of breath and knew he needed more exercise. But after he was referred to a specialist at St. Luke’s and Roosevelt Hospitals, he learned he was in serious trouble. Dominik had four blocked arteries.

“I was a ticking time bomb,” Dominik remembers. “I had thought I needed to lose weight, but the doctors told me the immediate objective was to save my heart.” In the moments that followed, Dominik learned about the up-to-date techniques the doctors would use to open his arteries. Then it was straight to surgery.

Dominik will be the first to tell you that the personal care at St. Luke’s and Roosevelt Hospitals surpasses even its outstanding facilities and equipment. “I survived because of Dr. David Coven and the people at Roosevelt. I call them angels. They were seasoned professionals… I got a dream team of top people who were sensitive to my needs.”

A Healthy Outcome Brings Dominik Home

Dominik’s bypass surgery was successful and his recovery has put him back on his feet. He’s staying active and keeping up with wife Maritza’s “honey do” list for their weekend home in Dutchess County. And when he looks in the mirror, he laughs at the two-pronged scar on his chest. “My friends call me Dominik the Zipper. But that scar reminds me of how lucky I am!”

Lucky indeed. Dominik knows that not everyone has an outstanding hospital right in the neighborhood. “I’ve worked with medical personnel in the past, and I could appreciate that, at St. Luke’s and Roosevelt Hospitals, they had a genuine concern that went far beyond their jobs.”

If you or someone you love ever receives a diagnosis like Dominik’s, we want to be standing by with all our resources at the ready. Please make your gift to St. Luke’s and Roosevelt Hospitals today.
